Anxiety is something we all experience from time to time. Everyone gets tense or nervous before an exam or starting a new job. Luckily for many of us, these feelings eventually go away. For some people though, feelings of fear and anxiety don't go away, and start having an impact on their everyday life.
A person with anxiety may develop muscular tension and headaches. Rapid breathing can lead to dizziness and increased blood pressure can cause pins and needles. Anxiety can also lead to feelings of fear and being on edge. Someone with anxiety may worry that the worst is going to happen. For example, if a friend is late, they may worry there has been a terrible accident when in fact the train was delayed.
Sometimes, anxiety can lead to a panic attack This is a rapid build-up of strong sensations, like a pounding heartbeat, feeling faint, chest pains or nausea. During a panic attack, a person may be convinced they are about to die; it's a terrifying experience.

There are a number of ways to reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. Many young people find that listening to music can distract them from negative thoughts.
You can also try relaxation techniques and breathing excercises, to help reduce your stress levels. Taking excercise, eating healthily and getting enough sleep can also help deal with anxiety and stress.
If you think someone is having a panic attack, reassure them and encourage them to sit down and relax. If they're breathing very fast, try and get them to slow down; ask them to hold their breath for 6 seconds and then breath out slowly. Then try and get them to breathe in for 3 seconds and out for 3 seconds, until they have started breathing normally.
If you are really concerned about someone, call an ambulance.
