bi-polar disorder (manic depression)
Everybody has their ups and downs in daily life, but with bi-polar disorder these changes are extreme. Someone diagnosed with bi-polar disorder may swing from periods of deep depression to periods of overactive, excited behaviour known as 'mania'. Between these severe highs and lows can be periods of stability.
During a 'manic' phase, someone may feel euphoric and full of energy; not needing much sleep. They may be full of a sense of their own importance, spend money extravagantly and be full of ambitious plans and idea.
The more consistent symptom of bi-polar disorder (manic depression) is depression. During a depressive phase, a person may be overwhelmed by feelings of despair and worthlessness, and find it very hard to complete even simple tasks. The experience of bi-polar disorder may provoke suicidal feelings.
There are various treatments including medication and talking therapies like counselling. If a person is very ill, they may be admitted to hospital.
