depression

Feeling sad or miserable from time to time is perfectly normal, but when these feelings don't go away and start interrupting your everyday life, sadness can turn into depression. Unfortunately, depression is common in the UK and can effect anyone, including children and young people. Around 1 in 6 people experience experience some form of depression in their lifetime.

There is no one cause of depression; it varies from person to person. Certain stressful life events have been linked to depression, such as the death of a loved one or divorce.Other factors that can make a person more prone to depression include having a poor diet and a lack of physical fitness.

Depression can affect people in different ways. Often people lack motivation and energy, or lose their concentration. People with severe depression may start having suicidal thoughts. Physical activity, like going for a walk, can help lift your mood when you're depressed. If you are feeling really down, you should visit your GP who will be able to advise you on a number of treatments, including medication and talking therapies, like counselling. If you are worried that someone you know might be depressed, ask them if they're OK (if you feel comfortable doing so). Offer them reassurance and support, and suggest ways they could get help. You could suggest they call the Samaritans or visit their GP.
