What does it look like?

  • Ecstasy is commonly sold in tablet form. Pills come in many different shapes and colours, often with a logo stamped on them.
  • Pure ecstasy is a white powder known as MDMA. This is usually bought in small plastic bags or small paper envelopes called ‘wraps'.

How do you take it?

  • Pills are usually swallowed, but can be crushed and snorted.
  • MDMA powder can be snorted up the nose like cocaine.
  • What does it feel like?

  • Doing ecstasy can give people an energy buzz that makes them feel alert and energetic.
  • Ecstasy makes people feel in tune with their surroundings - sounds and colours are more intense.
  • Users often feel great love for the people they're with and the strangers around them, which can lead to embarrassing situations!
  • Lots of people feel chatty when on ecstasy.

What are the risks?

  • Ecstasy affects the body's temperature control. Dancing for long periods in a hot atmosphere increases the chances of overheating and dehydration
  • Users can lose control of their jaw and grind their teeth; which looks weird and is really bad for your teeth.
  • Short-term effects of use can include anxiety, panic attacks, confused episodes and paranoid or psychotic states.
  • There's no way of telling what's in a pill until you've swallowed it; there may be negative side effects from other ingredients in the tablet.
  • Ecstasy can make users feel depressed after use.
  • There have been over 200 ecstasy-related deaths in the UK since 1996.
  • Using ecstasy has been linked to liver, kidney and heart problems.

  • Ecstasy is illegal. Ecstasy is a Class A drug
  • Getting caught with ecstasy can get you up to 7 years in jail
  • Supplying someone else can get you a life sentence and an unlimited fine.
