Brent Mind Services
We all know that getting active is good for our bodies – but there’s strong evidence that it’s good for our minds too.
Taking up a sport can be a fun and enjoyable way of staying healthy. It can boost your confidence, increase your energy levels and is a great way of meeting new friends in your area.
Brent Mind is delivering an exciting programme designed for people with mental health problems, who want to be more active. If you’ve got a mental health problem, finding the energy to be more active can be a struggle. It’s also hard finding an activity that feels right, while starting something new can sometimes feel scary. That’s where Get Set To Go can help. You’ll get support from a dedicated staff member who will work with you to:
- Identify the barriers that stop you being active
- Find out what you want to achieve with your physical activity
- Set some goals and identify how best to achieve them
You can also choose to link up with one of our trained volunteers who understand the challenges you face when it comes to getting active.
You can join if you’re 18 or over. You don’t have to be currently receiving treatment and you don’t need a referral from your GP.
Most activities are free of charge or sometimes there may be a small fee depending on the activities or the provider.
On offer you can attend the following:
- A multi-sport taster session
- Regular sport sessions
- Buddy up with a trained volunteer for extra support and encouragement
- Link up with a local community sport club (who have completed the Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity Providers workshop)
Elefriends is a supportive online community where you can be yourself. We all know what it’s like to struggle sometimes, but now there’s a safe place to listen, share and be heard.
Elefriends gives great tips and advice on getting physically active plus the opportunity to speak to likeminded people about sport.

“I suffer with chronic lower limbs which motivated me to become more active! I originally started doing exercise at the gym. When I first started accessing the services at Brent Mind I started with the walking group. I began by walking one lap round the local park.
Since starting sports with the ‘Get Set to Go’ Programme I have lost 2 stone! As well as losing weight the sessions have become part of my lifestyle. The ‘Get Set to Go’ sessions have helped improve my breathing, I do not get as breathless as I once did. I feel Improving physical health has helped change my outlook on life. Mental health can dip; the groups / sports have helped keep me on track and focus. I feel good about myself. I am now managing relationships better as well as walking away from some. I depended on my walking stick however after attending a number of sessions and continuously exercising I feel more confident walking without it.
I feel with the numerous sports that the programme run has enabled me to feel less angry, I’ve become much calmer and thoughtful.
If someone was interested in starting sports with Get Set to Go I would say definitely try the sports as there are a lot of health benefits, the sports are free and help stabilise your mental health. My personal favourite is the walking basketball!”

“I suffer from a life long illness which makes me depressed, on a weekly basis I get attacks as a result of it. I also suffer with anxiety and panic attacks.
Before I joined ‘Get Set to Go’ I used to feel depressed and stay indoors all the time now I prefer being outside in fresh air.
I have been part of the ‘Get Set to Go’ Programme since it started. I originally joined the programme to become fitter and healthier. I like to keep fit and enjoy taking long walks by myself.
I have taken part in golf and I loved it! I also did woman’s football for a short period. Tennis was another sport that I really enjoyed. I am looking forward to starting swimming in June!
By taking part in sports with ‘Get Set to Go’ it has made me more motivated and has made me happier. I look forward to going to the sessions.
After taking part in the variety of sports I feel happier, I wish some of the sports ran for longer periods. Participating in the sessions has helped me focus and be more positive.
Exercise is really good for health wellbeing and your mind!”
